The project
Paper is a six-second video made for ‘The Shortest Video Art Ever Sold’ at the Moving Image art fair in New York. An RGB-D recording of two people touching hands in a hotel room becomes a fragmented black-and-white drawing. I processed the footage with an experimental RGBDToolkit branch, then painted over the video frames by hand.
I was interested in what would happen if I treated RGB-D footage as another material. We were testing virtual relighting and tessellation in an experimental RGBDToolkit branch; I no longer remember exactly which branch I used. I took a brief recording of two people in a hotel room touching hands and drew over the frames. The result sits somewhere between illustration, animation, and a volumetric image.
The paintover was laborious. The exhibition's six-second limit turned out to be a useful container: long enough to hold a small study of intimacy, short enough to make the frame-by-frame drawing possible. I think of it somewhere between a sketch and an art piece.
