interfaceThe project
Strata (Game) is an interactive documentary game in development, set inside the same densely reconstructed patch of the Badlands used by the performance and installation. A playable prototype lets us test how a player’s movement can organize documentary material: paths through the terrain bring voices, field recordings, archival material, and images into changing relation. The world and its mechanics are still being developed, but the central proposition is already playable: there is no single route through the place and no single account that contains it.
The game will give each player their own route through the landscape. They will decide what to follow, what to pass by, and when to turn back. Some encounters will come from proximity: a voice carried along a walked route, an observation tied to a plant or fossil, an archival fragment encountered in the place it complicates. Others will remain elsewhere. The sequence will be made through movement rather than chosen from a menu.
We are using the playable prototype to tune the relationship among scale, distance, sound, and attention. Trail-camera records, field recordings, and other forms of nonhuman observation are part of that work. The aim is to let ecological thinking become experiential: knowledge arrives in relation to where you are, what you notice, and what you may have missed.
My role
I direct and produce the game and serve as its virtual cinematographer. My work centers on the scanned landscape, the player's point of view, and the spatial structure that brings documentary material into the game.
